A Legion Go BIOS Is Bricking Handhelds, and NVIDIA Joins the Linux Firmware Pipeline

Owners report Lenovo's N3CN42WW BIOS leaving first-generation Legion Go handhelds unbootable, NVIDIA becomes the fourth premier sponsor of LVFS, and Proton 11.0-2 lands as a release candidate.

A handheld has no second BIOS chip and no comfortable path to a flash clip, so a firmware update on one sits closer to a one-way door than the same operation on a desktop board. That framing matters this week, because the biggest handheld story is a vendor BIOS that some owners say never lets the machine boot again.

Lenovo's N3CN42WW leaves first-generation Legion Go units dark

First-generation Legion Go owners report that after installing the N3CN42WW BIOS the handheld stops booting: power button and controller LEDs on, fan spinning, screen black. PC Gamer's account of the bricked units has owners who followed Lenovo's own instructions, staying on the official charger and not restarting mid-flash, and VideoCardz on the repair quotes puts out-of-warranty service at around €237, which is where PC Gamer's "over $250" figure comes from. Devices still under warranty have been repaired or replaced at no charge.

Lenovo has not published an advisory, has not confirmed a fault, and has not pulled the file from its support page, so this is a pattern of owner reports rather than a confirmed defect, and no failure rate is available. One detail makes it harder to catch early: Lenovo's own support note tells Legion Go owners that a black screen lasting about two minutes during a BIOS update is normal, which is exactly the signal an owner would otherwise use to tell that something had gone wrong.

The practical read is to skip N3CN42WW unless its release notes fix something the device is actually doing, and to check warranty status before flashing at all, because the recovery path here is a service centre rather than a second attempt. Keeping an older handheld alive moved in the same direction elsewhere: PC Gamer on the restocked Deck battery has the OEM Steam Deck LCD pack back at iFixit for $129.99, up from $79.99 for an unchanged 40 Wh part, with iFixit's own aftermarket cell still listed at $79.99. Neither Valve nor iFixit has explained the increase.

NVIDIA becomes the fourth OEM funding LVFS

NVIDIA now backs the Linux Vendor Firmware Service at the premier tier, $100,000 a year, alongside Dell, Lenovo, and HP. LVFS maintainer Richard Hughes writes that the fourth OEM takes the project to the funding target it set last year, and Phoronix on the sponsorship notes that the firmware NVIDIA actually ships through the service today is for DGX Spark, with Vera Rubin servers and future platforms named as possible additions. GamingOnLinux picked it up from the Linux gaming side.

None of this reaches a GeForce card. There is no consumer GPU VBIOS on LVFS, and a desktop RTX board still updates its firmware the way it always has. What is worth noting is the shape of the alternative: fwupd hands over a signed, versioned image through one auditable channel, with a visible update history and a vendor able to withdraw a bad release from the same place it published it. Set that against a BIOS sitting on a support page as a Windows executable and the difference is not the flashing, it is everything around it. Sponsoring LVFS is also not the same as routing every product line through it, which is worth keeping in mind given who else is on that sponsor list.

Proton 11.0-2 is out for testing, and it is mostly repair work

Proton 11.0-2 is available as a release candidate, opt-in from the Beta dropdown on Proton 11 in a game's properties. GamingOnLinux's rundown of the RC covers black screens in Forza Horizon 4, 5 and 6 on recent SteamOS builds, Forza Horizon 6 closing itself after suspend and resume, Rocket League, The Division 2 and Squad failing to start under a non-English locale, and Diablo IV, Marvel Rivals, Helldivers 2, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Arc Raiders playable again after game-side updates broke them. Components move with it: Wine Mono 11.2.0, FEX-2607 for x86 on ARM64, and a dxvk build from the proton-11 branch.

The composition of that list is the story. Most of it is regression repair, some caused by Proton 11 itself and some by games patching underneath it, which is what compatibility work looks like against a moving target rather than a port that finishes. The locale bug is a good example of the class, since nothing in a Verified badge catches a title that only fails when the system language is not English. Valve's release list still shows 11.0-1b as the newest stable build, so 11.0-2 stays testing-only for now and no stable date has been announced.

Taking a low-level update without gambling

Weigh these by what being wrong costs. Proton is the cheap end: per-game, reversible from the same dropdown, and testing an RC on one title costs a restart. Handheld firmware is the other end, where a bad flash has no user-serviceable recovery and the price of the mistake is a repair quote. Apply a BIOS update when the release notes name a problem the device actually has, not because the support page offers a newer number.
